Spatially Resolved Circumstellar Structure of Herbig Ae/Be Stars in the Near-Infrared
نویسنده
چکیده
We have conducted the first systematic study of Herbig Ae/Be stars using the technique of long baseline stellar interferometry in the near-infrared, with the objective of characterizing the distribution and properties of the circumstellar dust responsible for the excess near-infrared fluxes from these systems. The observations for this work have been conducted at the Infrared Optical Telescope Array (IOTA). The principal result of this paper is that the interferometer resolves the source of infrared excess in 11 of the 15 systems surveyed. A new binary, MWC 361-A, has been detected interferometrically for the first time. The visibility data for all the sources has been interpreted within the context of four simple models which represent a range of plausible representations for the brightness distribution of the source of excess emission: a Gaussian, a narrow uniform ring, a flat blackbody disk with a single temperature power law, and an infrared companion. We find that the characteristic sizes of the near-infrared emitting regions are larger than previously thought (0.5 − 5.9 AU, as given by the FWHM of the Gaussian intensity). A further major result of this paper is that the sizes measured, when combined with the observed spectral energy distributions, essentially rule out accretion disk models

Sub–astronomical Unit Structure of the Near-infrared Emission from Ab Aurigae
We present near-infrared, long-baseline, interferometric observations of AB Aurigae, a well-known Herbig Ae/ Be star, obtained with the Infrared Optical Telescope Array. The near-infrared emission from this source has been spatially resolved for the first time, and the observations indicate a characteristic diameter of 5 mas for the emission, corresponding to 0.7 AU at the distance of AB Aur. T...
متن کاملMid - InfraRed imaging of the circumstellar dust around three Herbig Ae stars : HD 135344 , CQ Tau , HD 163296 ⋆
Aims. Planet formation has been known for many years to be tied to the spatial distribution of gas and dust in disks around young stars. To constrain planet formation models, imaging observations of protoplanetary disks are required. Methods. In this framework, we have undertaken a mid-infrared imaging survey of Herbig Ae stars, which are pre-main sequence stars of intermediate mass still surro...
متن کاملResolved Mid-Infrared Emission Around AB Aur and V892 Tau with Adaptive Optics Nulling Interferometric Observations
We present the results of adaptive optics nulling interferometric observations of two Herbig Ae stars, AB Aur and V892 Tau. Our observations at 10.3 μm show resolved circumstellar emission from both sources. Further analysis of the AB Aur emission suggests that there is an inclined disk surrounding the star. The diameter of the disk is derived to be 24 to 30 AU with an inclination of 45 to 65 f...
متن کاملInner Rim of a Molecular Disk Spatially Resolved in Infrared Co Emission Lines
We present high-resolution infrared spectroscopy of the Herbig Ae star HD 141569 A in the CO v = 2 − 1 transition. With the angular resolution attained by the adaptive optics system, the gas disk around HD 141569 A is spatially resolved down to its inner-rim truncation. The size of the inner clearing is 11±2 AU in radius, close to the gravitational radius of the star. The rough coincidence to t...
متن کاملBinaries among Herbig Ae/Be stars
We have studied the circumstellar environment of 31 Herbig Ae/Be and related stars in the near infrared by means of speckle-interferometry. For the brighter objects we reach or approximate diffraction-limited resolution of ≈ 0.1′′ (typically 100 AU at the object). Of the resolved objects some show halos, some have a companion. Here we restrict ourselves to a discussion of binarity in this sampl...
